How Sports Betting Works — A Beginner's Guide
A plain-language guide to sports betting basics: how odds work, common bet types, and how to manage your bankroll before you place a wager. Last verified: .
How Odds Work
Philippine sportsbooks typically display odds in one of three formats:
- Decimal odds (e.g. 1.90) — your total payout per ₱1 staked, including your original stake.
- Fractional odds (e.g. 9/10) — profit relative to your stake, stake not included.
- Moneyline/American odds (e.g. -110 / +150) — negative numbers show how much you need to stake to win 100 units; positive numbers show how much you win on a 100-unit stake.
Most PH platforms let you switch formats in account settings — the underlying probability is identical regardless of format.
Common Bet Types
- Moneyline / Match Winner — pick who wins outright.
- Point spread / Handicap — a team gets a scoring head start or deficit applied; you bet on the adjusted result.
- Over/Under (Totals) — bet on whether the combined score goes over or under a set number.
- Parlay / Combo bets — multiple picks combined into one bet; higher payout, but every leg must win.
Bankroll Management Basics
The single biggest reason beginners lose more than they should isn't bad picks — it's bet sizing. Set a fixed betting budget you can afford to lose completely, size individual bets as a small consistent percentage of it (many use 1–5% per bet), and track every bet. See our full Bankroll Management guide for more.
Where to Bet
Any sportsbook you use should hold a valid PAGCOR license. Of the platforms we've reviewed, OKBet has the broadest sports market coverage; BingoPlus is a solid alternative with a wider casino/bingo mix.
